Before co-founding Hawley Martin, Steve was a principal and Senior Vice President of what ADWEEK then dubbed, “The hottest agency in the United States,” The Martin Agency. His passion is to give that winning feeling to clients, whether they represent service, B2B, consumer products, or not-for-profit entities. Among the many have been BB&T, Virginia Tourism, Colonial Williamsburg, Mobil Oil, Eskimo Pie, Alcoa, two divisions of General Motors, a number of Nestlé brands, the American Forest Institute, and Dominion Virginia Power. He is the award-winning author of four novels and a number of business management titles, including two books on corporate leadership, and two more on marketing communications. He is the co-author with Bruce Goldman of BRAND ADVERTISING.
Most recently Major Gifts Officer at Hampden-Sydney College, John Carter is a magna
cum laude graduate of Southern Christian University and has an abundance of management, marketing, and client service experience. An entrepreneural spirit, after holding several key positions in the insurance industry, John founded and built a successful insurance agency by calling upon his considerable expertise in direct sales, product marketing, risk underwriting, team management, business development, and corporate branding.
Bruce is a graduate of Columbia University and a prolific creative director who has worked and lived in New York, Miami, and Richmond. Bruce has won more than 400 international, national, regional, local, and industry awards for outstanding advertising creativity and effectiveness. He is a life-long student of advertising and the co-author with Steve of the book that reveals our ad development secrets, BRAND ADVERTISING.
Mia develops media strategy and places TV and radio time. Mia began her career in media planning and buying with Comcast cable television where she learned the ins and outs of what works and what doesn’t, as well as what the true price of commercial TV time should be. With this knowledge she was able to double the TV exposure enjoyed by our client, the Richmond Raiders Professional Indoor Football Team, in 2012 versus 2011, and she did so without increasing the team’s budget for TV.
Mary is our technology, interactive guru, and graphic designer extraordinaire. Having taken up web design and implementation shortly after the Internet became a reality, Mary has a well-deserved reputation for an ability to combine graphic design talent with an ability to think strategically at a high level in order to produce outstanding work.
An extraordinary talent, Doug Malott has developed advertising campaigns, logos, package designs, and award-winning communications of every kind imaginable for many well-known clients such as Virginia Tourism, the Virginia Lottery, White Owl Cigars, Beechnut Chewing Tobacco, Wintergreen Resort, Carolinas Medical Center, and the City of Fredericksburg to name a few. His office shelves are lined with numerous awards, including Clios, Effies, One Show Pencils, and Cannon Balls.
Andrew came to Hawley Martin from the market research firm, RetailData Services. He is a graduate of Benedictine High School and Hampden-Sydney College, where he played Lacrosse, was a member of the Inter-fraternity Council, and was President of the Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Sigma.
Jim has worked for more than ten years conducting brand research and developing strategies for a variety of clients. He is a graduate of the Jepson Leadership School of the University of Richmond. In addition, he is an adjunct professor of advertising, entrepreneurship, and business planning at the University of Richmond. He has taught similar courses during summer sessions at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
